How to train for a 100 km cycling ride

A metric century rewards steady pacing and preparation more than one heroic training ride.

The short version

  • Use a weekly long ride as the main progression toward 100 km.
  • Build endurance in time, then use distance as an event-specific check.
  • Practice climbing, fueling, and route conditions before the taper.

Plan backward from the ride

Count the available weeks and mark the final lighter week first. Then place recovery weeks through the build. The remaining weekends show how many sensible increases are actually available for the long ride.

If you are new to structured riding, begin with three sessions per week. British Cycling's beginner plan progresses riders toward 50 km with three typical rides, and its guidance points riders toward a century plan after that foundation.

Build a week that supports the long ride

One midweek session can use sustained hills or tempo to make event pace feel controlled. A second short ride stays easy. The weekend ride grows gradually and includes terrain similar to the event when practical.

Distance alone can hide the load. Sixty kilometers on steep roads may require more time and recovery than a longer flat route. Track duration, elevation, perceived effort, and how you feel the next morning.

Make the final long rides specific

Use the bottles, food, clothing, and bike setup planned for the event. Practice starting at a restrained effort and eating before hunger becomes urgent. If the route is hilly, include long climbs without turning each one into a maximum effort.

The final week should remove fatigue. Keep a little familiar intensity in short doses, cut overall volume, and arrive with confidence in work already completed.

Common questions

Questions riders ask next

How far should my longest ride be before 100 km?

There is no mandatory number. A substantial long ride that rehearses several hours of pacing and fueling can be enough. Choose a distance you can recover from without disrupting the rest of the plan.

Can a beginner train for 100 km?

Yes, with adequate time and a safe starting point. Build first toward regular weekly riding and 50 km, then extend the long ride gradually.
