Understand what heart rate can miss
Heart rate responds more slowly than a short surge, so it is a poor steering target for a ten-second sprint. On a long steady ride, it may rise over time even when speed or power stays similar. Heat, dehydration, caffeine, stress, and poor sleep can shift the response.
Medications and medical conditions can also affect heart rate. Generic formulas cannot account for that; ask a qualified clinician when health or medication changes the interpretation.
Use zones as guardrails
On an endurance ride, heart rate can reveal that a conversational effort has gradually become harder. During a sustained interval, it can confirm whether the effort settles near the intended range after the initial lag.
When heart rate and perceived effort disagree sharply, investigate rather than forcing the target. The useful response may be an easier day, more fluids, a sensor adjustment, or medical advice when symptoms are present.
