A cycling tempo workout you can pace without a power meter
Tempo should feel purposeful and steady, with enough control to finish the final block like the first.
The short version
- Tempo is sustained work above easy endurance but below an all-out effort.
- Use breathing and repeatability when power data is unavailable.
- Keep recovery easy enough to restore control before the next block.
Find the effort by feel
After warming up, raise the pressure until speaking takes more effort but short sentences remain possible. The legs should feel engaged without the rapid burn of a short interval. Terrain, heat, and fatigue can change the speed that produces this effort.
Start with two blocks of eight to twelve minutes separated by easy spinning. The exact duration matters less than staying controlled from beginning to end.
Choose a route that lets you settle
A long gradual climb, quiet flat road, or indoor trainer works well. Busy intersections and rolling terrain can break the effort into repeated surges, which changes the session. Put safety and route suitability ahead of perfect timing.
If the first block feels easy, hold the same effort and evaluate the second. Tempo becomes useful through accumulated steady work, not by turning the last minute into a sprint.
Progress the total work
Add several minutes to each block or add a third block. Keep the recovery and effort stable while one variable grows. When the workout begins to require several days of recovery, reduce the volume or confirm that it has not drifted toward threshold.
Use tempo on a week where it supports the goal. Riders with limited time may value its steady workload, while beginners may improve well from easier endurance before needing it.
Common questions
Questions riders ask next
What should cycling tempo feel like?
It should feel steady and demanding but controlled. Breathing is deeper, conversation is limited, and the effort remains repeatable for several blocks.
Is tempo the same as threshold?
No. Threshold is harder and less sustainable. Tempo should leave more control and usually allows a greater total duration.
