Cycling threshold workouts: hard, steady, and controlled
Threshold work succeeds when the effort stays stable near your sustainable limit instead of fading after an aggressive start.
The short version
- Use a recent, appropriate threshold estimate rather than an old personal best.
- Begin with shorter blocks and keep output or effort consistent.
- Treat threshold work as a hard day and protect recovery around it.
Threshold is a narrow job, not a mood
Threshold training targets sustained work near the highest intensity you can hold for a prolonged effort. Platforms define zones differently, so confirm how your training tool sets the target. Perceived exertion should be hard and focused, with only brief speech possible.
Use a flat uninterrupted route, steady climb, or indoor trainer. Traffic and technical descents make a poor setting because the effort competes with decisions that matter more.
Start with manageable blocks
Two eight-minute blocks can teach pacing better than attempting a long test on the first day. Recover easily between them and compare the second block with the first. When both remain stable, extend the work in later weeks.
The session should feel demanding, but form and attention must remain intact. End the set when the target can no longer be maintained without a major change in movement or effort.
Place it where it can work
Put threshold training after an easy or rest day and follow it with recovery. One threshold session per week is plenty for many recreational riders, especially when a long ride or hard group ride is also present.
Threshold is specific, not compulsory. A beginner who is still building regular endurance may gain more from consistent easy riding before adding this load.
Common questions
Questions riders ask next
How long should threshold intervals be?
Start with blocks you can pace evenly, often several minutes rather than one continuous maximum test. Increase total time only when the current set remains controlled.
Can I train threshold without a power meter?
Yes. Use a repeatable route, heart rate with appropriate context, breathing, and perceived exertion. Accept that the target will be less exact and prioritize consistency.
